Dare to Climb Bukit Kelam? A Traveler’s Ultimate Adventure Guide

Bukit Kelam

ZONA BISNIS - If you've ever heard about Bukit Kelam, perhaps the first thought that comes to mind is, "How scary is this place?" But don't worry, it's just a "dark" name—in fact, the experience here can brighten your heart, even though the route makes your calves muscled! I first heard about Bukit Kelam when I was browsing anti-mainstream places in Indonesia. It turns out, this giant rock hill is one of the largest monoliths in the world, and that immediately makes you curious.

Honestly, at first I was a little doubtful. People say the route is quite challenging, especially for those who are not used to hiking. But if you don't try it, when will you, right? Finally, two of my friends and I decided to go to Sintang, West Kalimantan, where Bukit Kelam is located. Just getting there is an adventure in itself. From Pontianak airport, we need around 6-7 hours by land. Not bad for making your back sore, but along the way, we were treated to views of the extraordinary green nature of Kalimantan.

Preparations (and Mistakes) Before Climbing

Before climbing, I felt I was quite ready. Hiking boots? Check. Snacks? Check. But there's one thing I forgot: enough drinking water! This is a fatal mistake, guys. Bukit Kelam has steep terrain, and thirst comes very quickly. So, my first tip: bring lots of water, more than you think you'll need.

One more thing, make sure you use sunscreen. I forgot to use that time, and the result? Burnt skin from the sun up there is no joke. Oh yes, wear gloves to hold on, especially if you climb the iconic iron stairs. This ladder may look easy in the photo, but once you try it, wow, it really tests your courage.

Climbing Iron Stairs: Exciting or Exciting?

The iron ladder attached to the cliff is the highlight of the climb. Honestly, this is the part that made me almost give up. The stairs were really high, and at some points, the wind was quite strong. The grip must be strong, and don't forget to focus. On the way, I stopped to take a breath while enjoying the surrounding views. From a height, you can see green forests stretching as far as the eye can see, plus an extraordinarily beautiful blue sky.

Here, I realized one thing: fear is often only in our heads. Once we keep moving, it turns out we can get through it. So, if you feel doubtful, just remember, every small step brings you closer to the top.

The Prize is at the Top

As soon as we reached the top of Bukit Kelam, all the tiredness and nervousness immediately paid off. The view from the top was amazing. You can see the seemingly endless expanse of Kalimantan, with rivers flowing like silver ribbons. The gentle breeze up there makes the atmosphere even more peaceful. If you're lucky, you can see the sunset which makes the sky turn golden orange.

While sitting at the top, I had time to chat with other climbers who turned out to be local residents. They said that Bukit Kelam also has a mystical story which is quite famous in this area. It is said that this hill came from a large rock dropped by a giant. Interesting, right?

Important Tips for Those of You Who Want to Try

- Physical exercise first before climbing, especially for those who don't usually exercise. The route is not long, but quite tiring.
- Wear comfortable clothing, especially hiking shoes with good grip. The path is slippery, especially if it rains.
- Don't forget to check the weather before climbing. If it's cloudy or rainy, it's better to postpone it first, because the iron stairs can be slippery.
- Enjoy the journey. Don't focus too much on "when you reach the top," but enjoy every step and view.

So, if you are looking for an adventure experience that will stimulate your adrenaline while being at one with nature, Bukit Kelam is a place that must be on your bucket list. Dare to try? If so, I guarantee, this will be a story you will never forget!
